China’s import dependence to hit fresh high

China’s dependence on gas imports could hit a record high of 40% this year as stagnant domestic output fails to keep up with surging industrial demand driven by a structural shift away from coal.

Shanghai-based energy consultancy SCI International expects China’s import dependence to top 40% in 2017, up from 35% in 2016, when apparent consumption hit 205.8 billion cubic metres and imports reached 72.1 bcm.
